ADHD is a neuro-developmental condition frequently diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence and increasingly in adults. People with ADHD have patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity as well as increased impulsivity. They also have changes in their brain circuitry that affect the way dopamine works. The causes of ADHD are not fully known, but evidence suggests that it runs in families. There are also environmental and genetic factors that can lead to the condition. Symptoms of ADHD are responsible for deficiencies in executive functioning (working memory, organization, emotional regulation, and sustained mental effort) that often lead to problems and difficulties during the course of a person’s lifetime.
