ADHD & Addiction

Another feature that defines ADHD is that it rarely travels alone. One of the more prevalent and dangerous conditions that accompany ADHD is addiction. About 25-40% of people with addiction also have ADHD. Unfortunately, the symptoms and deficiencies that go along with ADHD also mean that these individuals often have difficulty recovering from addiction or other out-of-control behaviors.

In some cases, remedying the ADHD symptoms before tending to the addiction is the right course of action. Other situations may require focusing on the addictive behaviors first. Often coaching and other non-drug approaches (exercise, diet, mindfulness, CBT, family and peer support) play an important role in forming a successful recovery plan.
